The Transfers Led Straight Back to My Mother

The next morning, I took the receipts to my bank. The account numbers were partially hidden, but the transaction references were enough for them to trace the source. The money had come from an old savings account my parents opened in my name when I was a teenager. I had forgotten it existed. Mom had remained an authorized signer and had been moving money from it whenever Garrett fell behind.

Over the previous year, she had sent Megan nearly $5,000 while putting my name in the payment memo. Garrett genuinely believed I had been quietly covering for him. Mom had never told me because, as she eventually admitted, she knew I would refuse. Her explanation was that she was “keeping the peace” and protecting her grandchildren. I reminded her that secretly using money connected to me was not generosity.
...

I removed every remaining authorization, closed the old account, and downloaded the full transaction history. Then I sent Garrett one message containing the statements. “Those payments were never from me willingly. Whatever you owe from this point forward is between you, Megan, and the court.” He called repeatedly, furious that I had cut off what he had apparently started considering a backup system.

Eleven days later, Garrett attended his hearing without the arrears magically disappearing. I didn’t go. Mom did, and afterward she called to say the judge had made it clear that his children came before discretionary purchases. Within a month, Garrett sold the truck and arranged a payment plan. Mom eventually apologized, though rebuilding trust took much longer. What bothered me most wasn’t the missing money. It was realizing two adults had spent a year treating my finances like a family resource while calling Garrett’s child support my “responsibility.” It never was. His children were his responsibility all along.
