The Freezer Hid What Mom Feared Most

The object Coralie had pressed into my hand was a small brass key. My brother, Adrian, came down the stairs seconds later and stopped when he saw us beside the freezer. He immediately asked what we were doing. Coralie answered before I could. “Sorting food.” Adrian stared at us for a long moment, then told me he wanted the house cleared quickly because the estate was “already complicated enough.”

After he left, Coralie locked the basement door. We lifted the false bottom together and found a metal document box underneath. The brass key opened it. Inside were bank statements, property records, and a handwritten letter from Mom addressed to me. She explained that Adrian had been pressuring her for months to sign over her house and savings. She had refused, but several documents had appeared afterward carrying signatures she insisted were not hers.
...

Coralie had discovered what was happening and secretly helped Mom gather copies. The freezer was the only place Adrian never checked because he hated going into the basement. Mom had asked Coralie to protect the box until after her death, then give it directly to me. That was why she had been so desperate to keep the freezer plugged in and undisturbed.

I took everything to the estate attorney the following Monday. The questionable transfers were reviewed before anything else could be distributed, and several transactions were frozen while the paperwork was examined. Coralie eventually admitted she had stayed silent because she was terrified of destroying her marriage. Mine with Adrian was already finished. Mom’s final letter ended with one sentence I read over and over: “I hid the truth where the person looking for my money would never think to look.” The old freezer was worth almost nothing. What she had hidden underneath it protected nearly everything she had left behind.
