The Lake House Resort Closed the Next Morning

At five the next morning, Rowan and I got up before everyone else. We moved the geraniums back to the railing exactly where Mom had originally placed them. Then we made one more change. I removed the clean towels from the guest bathrooms, put away the breakfast ingredients Mom usually prepared, and taped a simple note to the refrigerator: “Coffee, food, laundry, and cleanup are self-service this weekend.”

Marguerite came downstairs around eight and immediately asked where breakfast was. I told her Mom was sleeping in. When she asked for fresh towels, Rowan pointed toward the washing machine. When she complained that the geraniums were blocking her view again, I smiled and said, “They’re Mom’s flowers on Mom’s deck. You can move your chair.” For once, Marguerite had absolutely nothing to say.
...

The rest of the weekend was remarkably educational. Everyone made their own breakfasts. Rowan’s father loaded the dishwasher. Marguerite eventually carried her own mug inside and even went grocery shopping after discovering the mayonnaise she preferred had run out. Meanwhile, Mom sat on the deck drinking coffee while someone else handled lunch for the first time all summer.

Before leaving Sunday, Marguerite approached Mom privately. She didn’t offer some dramatic apology, but she admitted she had become “too comfortable” and thanked her for hosting everyone. That was enough for Mom. After they drove away, she looked at the geraniums and laughed. “You really woke up at five for my flowers?” I told her the flowers had nothing to do with it. I was tired of watching her confuse hospitality with obligation. The cabin stayed open to family after that summer, but the invisible staff disappeared permanently.
