The Receipts Showed Where My Daughter’s Lunch Money Went
By midnight, I had a spreadsheet open beside eighteen months of grocery receipts. The total made me feel sick. My card had paid for thousands of dollars in premium groceries, supplements, restaurant gift cards, and household items that had nothing to do with helping my parents survive. Desmond appeared on dozens of receipts. So did gasoline cards, electronics, and expensive food my mother had never once mentioned.
Then I checked the transfers marked for Wren’s lunches. Mom had received every single payment. Nearly $2,300 over eighteen months. Yet the school account showed only a fraction of that amount had ever been deposited. The rest had disappeared into the same household where my daughter had been told to eat crackers so her grown uncle could have gas money.
