The Empty Seat Belonged to My Future

The person sitting in that fourth seat was Julian Mercer. At the time, he was simply the quiet investor I had met through a medical-device project connected to my research. He had driven two hours just to watch me graduate because he knew nobody else from my family was coming. Three years later, Julian became my fiancé—and the CEO of a healthcare technology company valued at nearly seven billion dollars.

My parents knew I was getting married, but they never bothered asking much about Julian. Mom assumed he was another engineer. Dad once referred to him as “that research guy.” I stopped correcting them. So when they chose Spencer’s yacht party over my wedding, I simply accepted their RSVP and continued planning. Julian and I were marrying during a nationally televised charity event connected to his foundation, but I never mentioned that either.
...

On the wedding afternoon, my parents were apparently drinking champagne aboard Spencer’s yacht when someone turned on a television. There I was, walking beneath an enormous floral arch beside Julian while the broadcast identified him by name and discussed the foundation’s multimillion-dollar medical grants. According to Rosalind, Dad nearly dropped his glass.

My phone started vibrating before the ceremony had even ended. Mom sent the first message: “WHERE ARE YOU???” Dad followed with six missed calls. Then Rosalind asked why I had never told them who Julian really was. I stared at the messages, remembered three empty graduation seats and a wedding they had casually dismissed as a disaster, and sent Mom one laughing emoji. Then I turned my phone off. Julian took my hand, the music started again, and for once I stopped wondering whether my family was watching. The people who mattered had already shown up.
