Dylan tried to speak first.
“This is just family support,” he said quickly. “Alex gave permission before deployment.”
The investigator didn’t move.
He opened the sealed file.
“There is no recorded authorization or power of attorney granting credit usage or loan application rights.”
A silence spread through the storefront.
Customers stopped browsing.
The music from the speakers felt too loud suddenly.
Dylan’s confidence tightened.
“That’s not how it happened. He knew about it.”
The investigator turned a page.
“Military access logs confirm Sergeant Turner was deployed offshore during the timestamped application submission.”
He looked up.
“And had no verified access to banking systems during that period.”
A murmur moved through the crowd.
Dylan laughed nervously.
“It was for the business. We’re brothers. It benefited him too—”
The investigator raised a hand.
“This is not a dispute about intent. This is a confirmed unauthorized credit application under federal review.”
He placed another document on the counter.
“The loan in question has been flagged for fraud investigation, and disbursement has been frozen pending legal review.”
The room went still.
Even the balloons looked out of place.
Dylan’s voice cracked.
“You’re blowing this out of proportion. It’s just money.”
I stepped forward for the first time since walking in.
“It wasn’t just money,” I said.
“It was my name.”
The investigator closed the file.
“Mr. Turner, your credit file has been temporarily protected pending resolution.”
Then he added,
“And all associated accounts are now under active fraud monitoring.”
The celebration didn’t recover.
People slowly left.
No one finished their drinks.
And Dylan stood behind his counter watching his “grand opening” turn into a closing statement no one could undo.
