The Worn Jacket Hid Who Held the Loan

I walked to the microphone and smiled at Bennett. “You’re right. I didn’t pay for this wedding. I only own the building.” The laughter stopped instantly. Then I explained that the venue belonged to Aldridge Hospitality, one of my companies, and the vineyard supplying the wine was also mine. Bennett stared at Marisol as though she had somehow deceived him. She hadn’t. My daughter knew I was comfortable. She simply respected my decision not to discuss numbers.
...

Harlan tried to laugh it off. “So you own a few properties. Congratulations.” I reached inside my jacket and removed the document from my attorney. His company’s largest commercial loan had recently been transferred into a lending fund in which my holding company was the controlling investor. I could not simply cancel his debt because he insulted my jacket, and I had no intention of trying. But the loan was approaching renewal, and any extension required fresh financial review and compliance with its existing covenants.

Then I mentioned what my advisers had found in Harlan’s refinancing package. Marisol’s name appeared in draft documents as a proposed personal guarantor, with references to future family assets she had never agreed to pledge. My daughter turned toward Bennett. “You knew about this?” His silence answered before he did. I handed Marisol the copy and told her she needed independent counsel before signing anything connected to the Ravencroft business.

I returned the microphone to the stunned DJ.

The wedding continued, because I would never punish my daughter for her husband’s arrogance.

But Monday morning, Harlan’s company faced a very ordinary problem: explaining its finances honestly to its lender.

My jacket was still worn.

Their confidence wasn’t.
