Wren Became Mine Without Rowan’s Permission or Approval

Coralie stared at me as if I had announced something impossible. Rowan finally managed, “You adopted a baby?” I looked down at Wren. After her emergency placement, the county had spent months following every required step—medical care, home visits, court hearings, and searches for relatives. Eventually, with no safe family placement available, her case moved toward adoption. The final order had been signed three weeks earlier. Wren was legally my daughter.
...

Rowan looked stunned. “You did all of that without telling me?” The question almost made me laugh. Our separation had already been finalized, and Rowan had made their feelings about adoption painfully clear years earlier. “You told me adoption meant admitting defeat,” I reminded them. “Then you left because I couldn’t give you the kind of family you wanted. You don’t get to be offended because I built one after you walked away.”

Sabine shifted uncomfortably, one hand resting over her stomach. Coralie, however, stared at Wren and whispered, “So she isn’t biologically yours.” I met her eyes. “Neither was love ever supposed to be a biology contest.” Wren stirred against me, opened her eyes, and immediately reached for my face. That tiny movement ended the conversation better than anything I could have said.

I carried her toward the exit while Rowan remained frozen beside the reception desk. Before I reached the door, they called my name and quietly asked whether I was happy.

I looked at Wren.

“Yes,” I said. “More than I knew I could be.”

They had once called me barren because I couldn’t produce the family they demanded.

Eight months later, I was carrying the family I had chosen.
