By that afternoon, my attorney corrected one thing immediately: nobody was losing the house overnight. Canceling my automatic payments simply meant Priscilla and Maurice would now have to pay their own mortgage and household bills when they came due. The document delivered that morning was not an instant foreclosure order either. It was formal notice that, under the written agreement we had signed five years earlier, their attempt to force me out could trigger repayment provisions tied to the $310,000 I had contributed.
That realization frightened them more than any dramatic threat could have. Maurice had always known paperwork existed, but apparently he had never bothered reading it carefully. Priscilla called crying, insisting she had never meant for me to actually leave. I reminded her of the supermarket: “You told me not to come back.” For once, she had nothing to say.
Through my attorney, I agreed to discuss a reasonable repayment arrangement, but I would not return to being their unpaid cook, babysitter, housekeeper, and emergency bank account. I found a small apartment near the lake and moved my remaining belongings there.
Priscilla thought refusing $1,240 in groceries was selfish.
