The next morning, Dad called again, this time with Marcus beside him and an attorney supposedly “looking into everything.” I gave them the contact information for the lawyer who had handled my purchase nine years earlier. The records were simple: my LLC held title to the lake property, I paid the taxes and insurance, and my family had been using it only because I allowed them to. Years of reunions did not give them ownership, and inviting 126 people certainly did not give them authority to turn my private property into their event venue.
Then Gregory sent me the invoices from previous retreats. Catering deposits, dock repairs, cleaning crews, utilities, boat rentals—I had quietly covered thousands every year while my parents presented themselves as generous hosts. I forwarded the totals to the family group chat along with one sentence: “Since there was no room for me, there will no longer be a retreat funded by me.”
Marcus called me selfish. Mom said I was destroying a family tradition.
I disagreed.
Traditions are supposed to include family, not use one member’s property while excluding her from it.
The following summer, the lake house was quiet.
I went there alone for the first weekend.
For the first time in nine years, nobody needed permission to invite me.
I already had the key.
