The Bandage Hid Grandma’s Final Handwritten Promise

When Nadia finally peeled away the gauze, Warren stopped breathing for a second. Along her forearm was a delicate line of lemon blossoms surrounding six words written in my mother’s unmistakable handwriting: “Keep your heart soft. I love you.” Nadia had taken the words from the last birthday card Grandma ever gave her. Beside them was one tiny lemon, matching the magnet still holding the funeral bill to our refrigerator.

...

Then Nadia finally cried. She told us Grandma had known she was sick long before we understood how little time remained. During one of their final afternoons together, Nadia had promised she would carry something of her grandmother forward. She had secretly saved every babysitting dollar for two years because she wanted the memorial to come from her, not from us. “I know I should’ve told you,” she whispered. “But everyone keeps talking about funeral bills and money. I didn’t want one more thing taken away because we couldn’t afford it.”

Warren sat beside her and covered his face. I remembered accusing my daughter of thinking only about herself when she had quietly been grieving alone.

We still talked seriously about the secrecy and the permanent decision she had made at fifteen.

But that night, neither of us punished her.

I simply held her arm carefully and apologized.

Nadia hadn’t ignored our grief.

She had been carrying hers under a bandage.
