I looked at Dorian and said, “If you walk out of this hospital because your presentation matters more than your daughter, don’t expect me to pretend tomorrow that nothing happened.” Rosalind immediately called me dramatic. Dorian hesitated for maybe five seconds, put on his coat, and followed his mother through the automatic doors anyway. I watched them leave, then turned back toward our crying baby and told the nurse I would be the only parent staying with her.

Thankfully, Wren was treated quickly. Doctors brought her fever down, ran tests, and kept us several hours for observation. While she finally slept against my chest, I opened my phone and wrote down exactly what had happened. By morning, I had called my sister for help, arranged somewhere else to stay after discharge, and scheduled a meeting with a family-law attorney. I wasn’t making legal decisions from an ER chair, but I was finished carrying a marriage where parenting became solely my responsibility whenever life became inconvenient.

Dorian called after his presentation.

“Mom says you’re overreacting.”

I looked down at Wren sleeping peacefully.

“No,” I said. “Your mother told me I’m the parent. Last night, you agreed with her.”

Then I ended the call.

Rosalind had come to rescue her exhausted son.
