The First Unpaid Bill Changed Everything Overnight
Marisol was screaming before I even said hello. The oil company had refused to schedule the next delivery because my automatic-payment account had been closed. Then Dashiell discovered the homeowners insurance would end at the close of the month unless he obtained his own policy. By lunchtime, he had also learned the internet, furnace contract, and several household services had always been in my name. Nothing had been sabotaged. I had simply stopped paying expenses for a property I no longer legally owned or lived in.
“You can’t just abandon your responsibilities,” Marisol snapped.
I almost laughed. “You explained my responsibility very clearly. I was a tenant paying for one room.”
