Desmond Planned to Sell My House—Then Learned His Own Daughter Had Owned It for Eight Months

Juniper took the folder back and read the recorded deed aloud. Eight months earlier, I had sold Harold’s house to her through an attorney-supervised closing. The agreement reserved my right to live there for the rest of my life for one dollar a year. I had been evaluated as fully capable of making the decision, the transfer was properly recorded, and Desmond had never owned a single percentage of the property he was preparing to list.

...

Then Juniper opened the second section of the folder. Desmond and Renata had lived there long enough that she was not going to pretend she could simply throw them onto the sidewalk. Her attorney had prepared the proper notice ending their permission to remain, and any removal would follow the required legal process. The nursing-home paperwork they had pushed toward me meant nothing because I had never agreed to leave, and my son had no authority to sign away my rights.

Renata stared at Desmond. “You told me this house was your inheritance.”

Juniper looked at him quietly.

“So you abandoned me because I wasn’t family enough,” she said, “but you were happy to inherit Grandma’s house before she was even gone?”

Desmond had no answer.

For three years, he had treated me like an obstacle between him and a half-million-dollar house.

Eight months earlier, I had removed the obstacle.

The house was never going to be his.
