The “Special Guest” Was Desmond’s Own Mother—and She Had One Question for Her Son

When the door opened, Desmond’s mother, Evelyn, stepped inside. His face turned crimson. Years earlier, Evelyn had gone through cancer treatment herself, and I had been the person driving her to appointments whenever Desmond was “too busy.” I had called her that afternoon and told her exactly where he had made Rosemary sleep. She walked past him, went straight to my mother, hugged her carefully, then turned around and asked, “When did being the man of the house start meaning humiliating a sick woman?”

...

Desmond tried to explain that it had only been one night and that his brother wanted the television. Evelyn did not let him finish. “Then you should have watched football in the basement.” Even his brother quietly agreed and left soon afterward. For once, Desmond had nobody laughing along with him.

I had already made arrangements. Rosemary moved temporarily into a furnished, accessible apartment near her treatment center, and I went with her. Because Desmond and I jointly owned our house, I did not pretend I could simply throw him out. Instead, I separated our finances, contacted an attorney, and told him I would not return unless there were serious changes.

Before leaving, Evelyn looked at her son and said, “A house doesn’t make you a man, Desmond. How you treat the weakest person inside it does.”

That was the first time all day he had nothing to say.
