Six Years Later, Travis Finally Met the Person His “Prank” Had Nearly Cost Him Everything

The woman in the minivan was named Evelyn. She gave me water, let me charge my phone, and drove me to the nearest sheriff’s office. By then, Travis had uploaded part of the “prank” online. That became the evidence I needed. Officers documented what happened, I contacted my sister, and when Travis eventually returned expecting me to climb back into his truck, I refused. The video disappeared from his channel shortly afterward, but I had already saved it. Within weeks, I had an attorney and somewhere else to live. The marriage ended without the dramatic reunion Travis kept expecting.

...

Six years later, he appeared outside the small design studio I had built in Colorado. He smiled when he saw me and said, “So you really disappeared.”

Then a little girl stepped from behind me and grabbed my hand.

Travis froze.

Her name was Clara. Weeks after leaving him, I had discovered I was pregnant. Travis had been formally notified during the divorce, and eventually paternity and parenting arrangements were handled through the proper legal process. He had chosen not to pursue a relationship beyond what was required.

Now Clara was six.

She looked at him curiously, then turned toward the man walking up behind us—my husband, Daniel.

“Dad, are we still getting pizza?”

Travis’s smile vanished.

Six years earlier, he had driven away laughing because he thought being abandoned would frighten me into appreciating him.

Instead, it taught me I could build a life without him.
