The Thirty Cars Finally Taught Roberta Who Actually Owned the Driveway

The elderly man was Mr. Callahan, the retired surveyor who had handled both properties years earlier. Roberta recognized him because he had already explained during a previous boundary dispute that my driveway was entirely on my parcel. What she apparently never bothered to remember was that the gravel lane behind my house also belonged to me and led to several acres my husband and I had maintained for years.

...

That morning, I was hosting a memorial gathering there for a local community group my husband had supported. Every one of those thirty drivers had my permission to park. Roberta did not. I had not ordered anyone to trap her SUV; I had simply told invited guests to use my driveway and private lane as they normally would. Her unauthorized car happened to be sitting at the very front.

Roberta demanded that everyone move immediately. Mr. Callahan opened his folder and showed her the recorded survey again. Then I handed her copies of the messages where I had repeatedly told her not to park on my property.

I moved the cars once the gathering allowed it, because I had no interest in keeping her trapped.

But afterward, I sent Roberta written notice that any future unauthorized parking would be documented and handled properly, including towing if permitted.

She never parked there again.

For eight months, Roberta thought an empty driveway meant nobody owned it.

Thirty invited cars finally explained the difference.
