I Was Ready to Call 911 Until I Saw What He Took
He looked up, saw me standing there with my phone, and immediately raised both hands. Then he quietly said, “I’m sorry. I haven’t eaten since yesterday.” He placed the lunch box back on the passenger seat as if he expected me to start yelling. A few minutes earlier, I had been terrified and furious that a stranger was inside my car. But seeing that half sandwich in his hand changed the entire situation.
I asked him to wait while I went inside. I brought back fresh sandwiches, fruit, water, and a warm jacket my husband no longer wore. He kept apologizing and insisted he hadn’t taken any money or valuables. He told me he had noticed the lunch box through the window and acted out of desperation. I still explained that entering someone’s car wasn’t okay, but I couldn’t bring myself to call the police over food.
