The Smart Lock Finally Ended My Family’s Habit of Treating My Home Like Their Property

I answered Colette’s video call with the camera feed still open on my screen. She immediately demanded the code while Julian’s relatives stood behind her looking increasingly uncomfortable. Instead of arguing, I calmly repeated that nobody had permission to enter my apartment and that the old key had been copied without my consent. Then I told her the building manager had already been informed about the situation. Colette’s expression changed. She had expected another family argument she could eventually wear me down in. She had not expected a written record showing I had explicitly refused access before she arrived.

...

When Colette continued knocking and insisted they were staying anyway, the building manager came upstairs. I spoke to him by phone and confirmed that none of the eight people were authorized occupants or guests. Because they had never entered or established residency, there was no complicated eviction issue. They were simply visitors whose invitation did not exist. Julian’s father finally asked Colette, quietly, “Did your brother actually agree to this?” She admitted he had not.

They left with their luggage twenty minutes later.

Mom called me furious and said I had humiliated my sister over “one weekend.”

“No,” I told her. “Colette humiliated herself by promising eight people a home that wasn’t hers.”

The next morning, I collected Mom’s emergency key, even though it no longer worked, and told my family there would be no replacements.

For years, they thought access to me meant access to everything I owned.

A keypad finally taught them the difference.
