I Always Left Bottled Water in My Hot Car Until I Learned What Extreme Heat Can Quietly Do to Plastic—and Why Experts Say It’s a Habit Worth Breaking
Like many drivers, I used to leave a bottle of water in my car without giving it a second thought. It sat in the cup holder through errands, workdays, and even weekends. After all, it was just water—or so I believed.
Then I learned what can happen inside a parked vehicle during the summer. Even on a warm day, the temperature inside a closed car can quickly soar above 120°F (49°C). That intense heat doesn’t just make the seats unbearable—it also affects many everyday items, including disposable plastic water bottles.
Most single-use bottles are designed for normal storage conditions, not days of baking inside a hot vehicle. According to experts, repeated exposure to high temperatures may increase the migration of tiny amounts of certain chemicals from the plastic into the water. While the water often looks, smells, and tastes completely normal, prolonged heat exposure is something health professionals recommend avoiding whenever possible.
Heat can also encourage bacteria to grow if you repeatedly refill disposable bottles, especially when they aren’t cleaned thoroughly. That’s one reason many experts suggest switching to reusable stainless steel or insulated bottles, which are far better suited for everyday use and keep drinks cooler for much longer.
Water bottles aren’t the only items affected by summer heat. Aerosol cans, disposable lighters, electronics, batteries, medications, sunscreen, and even groceries can all become damaged or unsafe when left inside a hot car for extended periods.
Now, whenever I leave my vehicle, I take a few extra seconds to grab my water bottle and any other heat-sensitive items. It’s a simple habit, but it helps protect both my belongings and my health. Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference—and something as ordinary as a forgotten bottle of water is a perfect reminder that a hot car is far more powerful than it looks.
