The smell reached me before I crossed the doorway. Boxes and trash were stacked shoulder-high through the hallway, leaving only a narrow path between rooms. One exit was completely blocked. Spoiled food covered the kitchen counters, and the refrigerator was barely working. Then Oliver pointed toward the living room. His grandmother was lying on a recliner beneath several blankets, weak and confused, with medication bottles scattered across a nearby table. Oliver whispered that she had fallen twice that week and could no longer prepare meals.
