Damon Expected a Wedding—Instead, I Changed the Ceremony Into My Goodbye
The first person I called that night was not the wedding planner. It was my attorney. I learned that marrying Damon would not automatically make my house and savings his, but the financial agreement he had been pressuring me to sign could have created serious problems. I canceled every authorization connected to him, moved important documents into a safe-deposit box, changed my passwords, and told the planner there would be no legal marriage ceremony. The guests could still arrive, the flowers could stay, and dinner would still be served. I simply asked the officiant not to file or sign anything.
