A nail punch may look like nothing more than a small metal rod, but this simple tool has helped woodworkers achieve cleaner finishes for generations.
Also known as a nail set, its purpose is to drive a nail head slightly below the surface of the wood. After the nail has been hammered almost completely into place, the tip of the punch is positioned directly over the nail head. A gentle tap with a hammer pushes it beneath the surface without leaving large hammer marks in the surrounding wood.
Once recessed, the small hole can be filled with wood filler and sanded smooth. This makes nails much less noticeable when furniture, trim, cabinets, or other woodworking projects are painted, stained, or varnished.
Modern nail punches are usually made from hardened steel and come in several sizes to match different nail heads. Some newer versions even use spring-loaded mechanisms, allowing them to work without a separate hammer.
Despite modern power tools, this basic hand tool remains valuable because it is inexpensive, precise, and requires virtually no maintenance.
Sometimes the most useful tools aren’t complicated—they simply perform one small job exceptionally well.
