You’ll Never Guess What Paprika Is Really Made Of

Paprika is one of those spices many people use without ever stopping to wonder where it comes from. Its rich red color and distinctive flavor can make it seem exotic, but the truth is surprisingly simple: paprika is made from dried and ground red peppers.

Different peppers and drying methods create different varieties. Sweet paprika is typically made from mild peppers and adds color with gentle flavor. Hot paprika uses spicier varieties, while smoked paprika gets its unmistakable smoky taste from peppers traditionally dried over wood fires.

Paprika has especially strong culinary traditions in Hungary and Spain, where it became an important ingredient in dishes ranging from goulash to stews, sausages, and roasted foods. The peppers themselves originated in the Americas before spreading to Europe centuries ago.

Beyond flavor, paprika naturally contains plant pigments and compounds such as carotenoids, including beta-carotene. However, because most recipes use relatively small amounts, it is best appreciated primarily for the color, aroma, and flavor it brings to food.

Sometimes familiar pantry ingredients have the most surprising stories. That little container of red powder isn’t made from an unusual root or seed—it begins with something as recognizable as a ripe pepper.
