The receptionist explained that a woman had arrived with discharge papers, identification, and documents claiming she was my mother’s daughter. Staff believed everything was legitimate, especially because Mom seemed to recognize her.
My hands began shaking.
I was an only child.
The nursing home gave me the address listed on the paperwork, and I called the police before driving there. The house belonged to a woman named Helen, a retired nurse who had worked with my mother decades earlier.
When the door opened, Mom was sitting safely in the living room, drinking tea and wearing one of Helen’s cardigans.
Then Helen told me the truth.
She was my older sister.
My mother had given birth to her as a teenager and placed her for adoption under pressure from the family. They quietly reconnected years later, but Mom had been too ashamed and frightened to tell me. After the fall, Helen began visiting during weekdays when I was working. She believed Mom had asked to live with her, but she had no idea I was unaware of their relationship.
I was furious that Helen had removed her without contacting me, yet the documents showed Mom had signed the arrangement while still considered capable of making that decision.
We eventually agreed that Mom would stay with Helen while I remained closely involved in her care. Losing control of the situation terrified me, but I had not lost my mother.
Instead, I discovered the sister she had hidden for nearly sixty years.
