My 92-Year-Old Dad’s Response Left the Entire Food Court Laughing

My father calmly looked at the teenager’s bright, spiked hair and replied, “When I was young, I got drunk one night and spent time with a parrot. I was just wondering whether you might be my son.”

For one long second, the teenager stared at him in complete disbelief. Then someone at the next table burst out laughing. Within moments, half the food court was trying not to choke on their lunch.

The teenager’s face turned bright red, but even he eventually smiled. He shook his head and admitted that he had walked straight into that response.

My father finally explained that he had not been staring because he disapproved of the young man’s appearance. The unusual colors had reminded him of a close friend from his younger days who was always experimenting with bold clothes and hairstyles. At 92, Dad said, he had already lived long enough to know that someone’s hair revealed very little about their character.

The teenager sat with us for several minutes, and they ended up talking about music, fashion, and how different life had been when my father was young. Before leaving, he offered Dad a fist bump and said, “You’re pretty funny for an old guy.”

Dad accepted it and replied, “You’re pretty polite for a parrot.”

That started another round of laughter.

The moment reminded me that generations do not always have to argue. Sometimes one quick joke can turn an uncomfortable misunderstanding into a conversation neither person expected.
