This Simple Trick Can Make Tarnished Jewelry Shine Again
Jewelry can lose its shine surprisingly quickly. Everyday exposure to moisture, air, perfume, lotions, and skin oils can leave favorite rings, necklaces, and bracelets looking dull or discolored.
For plain sterling silver, one popular household cleaning method uses aluminum foil, baking soda, salt, and hot water. Rather than relying entirely on scrubbing, the combination creates a chemical reaction that can help remove silver tarnish.
Line a heat-safe bowl with aluminum foil and add one tablespoon each of baking soda and salt. Pour in about one cup of very hot water, add a few drops of dish soap, and place the jewelry inside so it touches the foil. Allow it to sit for several minutes before rinsing thoroughly and drying with a soft, lint-free cloth.
The transformation can be surprisingly noticeable, especially on heavily tarnished silver pieces.
However, this method isn’t suitable for every type of jewelry. Pearls, opals, turquoise, glued stones, antique finishes, and other delicate pieces may be damaged by heat, moisture, or cleaning solutions. When in doubt, use a cleaning method recommended specifically for that material or consult a jeweler.
Sometimes a treasured piece doesn’t need replacing—it simply needs a few minutes of careful cleaning.
