For several seconds, I couldn’t speak. My husband was downstairs, laughing at something on television, while our daughter sat beside me believing she needed to resemble a woman I knew nothing about.
I asked Sophie to stay in her room and walked downstairs with my hands shaking. When I repeated what she had said, my husband’s face changed instantly.
He didn’t look confused.
He looked caught.
The truth came out slowly. Months earlier, his mother had discovered messages between him and a coworker named Vanessa. He claimed it had never become physical, but the photographs, private dinners, and promises in those messages told another story.
His mother had protected him. Worse, she had shown Sophie a photograph of Vanessa during their shopping trip and told her that women who stayed thin kept men interested.
I told him to leave that night.
Then I called his mother and made one thing perfectly clear: she would never be alone with Sophie again. She tried to call it motivation, but cruelty disguised as advice is still cruelty.
The unopened clothes were returned the next morning. Sophie and I spent the day together, choosing outfits she genuinely loved.
Before bed, she ate two scoops of ice cream.
This time, nobody told her she hadn’t earned them.
