Looks like you will need another plan.
Then I turned off my phone.
Bellisimo did not let anyone leave until the bill was settled. Renee had ordered premium wine, extra appetizers, and an expensive cake because she assumed my card would cover everything.
When that card failed, the relatives who had remained silent suddenly had opinions.
Aunt Wanda later told me Renee demanded that everyone split the bill, but several guests refused. Dad eventually used the emergency credit card I had been making monthly payments on for nearly three years.
The following morning, I canceled those payments too.
I also removed myself from the family vacation reservation, stopped covering Dad’s supplemental insurance, and withdrew the monthly transfer Renee used toward her apartment.
Dad arrived at my home that afternoon.
He apologized for asking us to leave, but then immediately asked me to restore the accounts.
“That is not an apology,” I said. “That is another bill.”
Nolan appeared behind me holding the birdhouse.
Dad looked at it and finally understood what he had chosen to protect instead of his grandchildren.
He asked whether he could still have it.
“That decision belongs to Nolan,” I replied.
My son quietly carried the birdhouse back to his room.
They had made my children feel unwanted at a celebration I organized and financed.
The frozen card simply made the adults experience what being excluded felt like.
