The “Hole” in a Safety Pin Has an Important Mechanical Purpose

The small circular opening near the bottom of a safety pin may look like an added feature, but it is actually part of the pin’s spring mechanism. It forms where the metal wire is tightly coiled before extending into the sharp point.

That coil stores tension. When you open the pin, the wire bends slightly and the loop acts like a spring, pushing the pointed end back toward the clasp. This pressure helps keep the pin securely closed once the point is tucked into its protective cover.

Without the circular coil, the metal would be much stiffer and could quickly bend out of shape. The pin might not spring open properly, remain firmly closed, or survive repeated use. The loop also helps distribute stress through the wire instead of concentrating it in one weak spot.

Some people use the opening to attach a cord, label, charm, or another pin. However, that is a secondary use rather than the reason it was created.

The protective clasp at the opposite end gives the safety pin its name because it covers the sharp point and reduces accidental pricks. Together, the clasp and spring coil turn a simple bent wire into a practical fastener that can be opened and closed repeatedly.
