“In Lyon,” I said calmly, “we considered it poor manners to insult a guest while relying on the assumption that she could not understand.”
Sabine’s face lost its color.
Etienne stopped speaking so abruptly that Mathieu lowered his glass and stared at him.
I continued in French, explaining that I had lived in Lyon for seven years, studied literature at the university, traveled throughout Europe, and later taught French and history for more than three decades.
Then I switched back to English so Paige would understand every word.
“They called you simple, unpolished, and culturally inadequate,” I told her. “They are concerned that Mathieu will spend his life carrying you.”
Paige looked at Mathieu.
He immediately apologized—not for his parents, but for failing to stop them sooner. Then he turned toward Sabine and Etienne and told them that if they could not respect his future wife and her family, they would have no role in the wedding planning.
Etienne attempted to explain that his comments had been misunderstood.
“They were perfectly clear,” I replied in French.
The remainder of dinner was painfully quiet.
The following morning, Sabine offered Paige a formal apology. Paige accepted it cautiously but made one condition clear: respect would no longer be optional simply because the insult was spoken in another language.
They believed my silence proved I had lived a small life.
All it proved was that I had been polite enough to let them reveal themselves first.
