James let out a short laugh.
“That’s impossible.”
“It isn’t,” I replied.
Caroline reached across the table and picked up the deed herself. She scanned every page, her confidence fading with each paragraph. As an attorney, she recognized the language immediately. Every signature, every filing date, every notarized page was legitimate.
“You bought the house?” she asked quietly.
“I did.”
“But…how?” James asked. “You couldn’t afford that.”
I couldn’t help smiling.
“That’s what all of you believed.”
For years they assumed I was barely getting by because I never talked about promotions, bonuses, or stock options. While they compared titles and salaries over holiday dinners, I quietly invested every raise, every RSU payout, and every bonus. I never felt the need to announce it.
Mom shook her head slowly.

James rubbed his forehead.
