The strange woman rushed towards me with the baby in her arms, breathless from running. Then she smiled awkwardly and apologised for interrupting. She explained that she was my sister’s neighbour—and the infant she carried was my sister’s child.
I stared at her, completely confused. I had not spoken to my family in years, and nobody had mentioned that my sister was pregnant. The woman handed me an envelope and said my sister had begged her to deliver it before my baby shower ended.
Inside was a letter written in my sister’s handwriting.
She admitted that our parents had continued treating her like the golden child long after I left. They paid her bills, watched her children, and excused every mistake. But when she recently became a single mother, their support suddenly came with conditions. They expected her to move back home, obey every decision they made, and eventually hand most childcare responsibilities to me once they “brought me back into the family.”
That was why the woman had rushed in. My parents were already driving to the shower, planning to announce that I would help raise my sister’s baby because “family comes first.”
I left before they arrived.
Later, my sister called and apologised for allowing me to be treated like a backup for so many years. I did not immediately forgive her, but we slowly began rebuilding our relationship—this time without our parents deciding what either of us owed the other.
