There is no single appliance that must always be unplugged “at all costs,” but the toaster is one of the smartest kitchen appliances to disconnect when it is not being used. Crumbs collect around its heating elements and can ignite if the toaster overheats, malfunctions, or is accidentally switched on.
The U.S. Fire Administration recommends unplugging small appliances when they are not in use. It also warns that crumbs inside a toaster can catch fire, making regular cleaning especially important.
