Our lawyer’s voice was unusually serious. Charles had collapsed shortly after leaving the café and was in the hospital. Doctors believed years of untreated heart trouble had finally caught up with him, and he had asked the lawyer to deliver an envelope if anything happened.
Inside was a handwritten letter. Charles admitted that he had spent decades making decisions for me because he believed protecting me meant controlling every detail. He never understood how trapped I felt until I asked for a divorce. At the café, he had not actually chosen my meal. He had ordered the soup because he remembered it was what I always ate when I felt anxious.
The letter also revealed that he had signed the house over to me during the divorce settlement, even though I had agreed to sell it and divide the money. He wanted me to have somewhere secure while beginning my new life.
I rushed to the hospital. Charles survived, but recovery took months. We did not cancel the divorce or pretend our problems had disappeared. Instead, we began talking honestly for the first time in years.
We eventually lived separately, yet remained close friends. Freedom did not require me to hate the man I had loved for half a century. Sometimes ending a marriage is not the end of caring—it is simply the beginning of loving each other differently.
