Her Mother’s Quiet Reply Ended Brenda’s Cruel Toast
My mother leaned close enough that only Brenda and the nearest guests could hear her clearly.
“You are standing in my daughter’s home, insulting her body during a medically difficult pregnancy while eating food she paid for,” she said. “Apologise now, or leave before I tell everyone why your last marriage really ended.”
Brenda’s face turned white.
Lucas stared at her. Apparently, his mother had spent years claiming her former husband abandoned the family without explanation. My mother had recently met one of Brenda’s old neighbours and learned the truth: Brenda’s constant public humiliation and cruelty had finally driven him away.
Brenda tried to laugh, but nobody joined her.
Lucas stepped beside me and told his mother she would not be welcome around our child until she gave a sincere apology and stopped commenting on my appearance. Brenda accused everyone of attacking her over a joke.
“It was only a joke to the person who wasn’t being humiliated,” my mother replied.
Brenda grabbed her handbag and rushed through the house without saying goodbye.
The silence lasted only a moment. Then Lucas kissed my forehead, took the glass from his mother’s abandoned place, and raised it.
“To my wife,” he said, “who is carrying our child with more strength and grace than anyone here could measure.”
This time, everyone applauded.
Brenda had expected her insult to make me feel small.
Instead, it revealed exactly who she was in front of everyone.
