A gold porch light is commonly used to show support for children and families affected by childhood cancer. Gold is the internationally recognised awareness colour because children are considered precious, much like the metal itself. The displays are especially common during September, which is observed as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Families may ask neighbours to replace their regular porch bulbs with gold ones after a child receives a diagnosis, during treatment, or in remembrance of a child who has died. Lighting several homes along the same street creates a visible sign that the family is supported and does not have to face the experience alone.
