Vanessa’s first call came from the airport.
She demanded to know why the airline could not find the reservation. Mariah shouted in the background about the resort deposit, while Caleb accused me of ruining a birthday over “one harmless change.”
I asked whether Ethan and Ava had seemed harmless when they removed them.
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa tried using the emergency card to book replacement flights. Declined. Caleb attempted to pay for a rental car. Declined again. Every account they had treated like family property was connected to money I earned.
The voicemail waiting for Vanessa was from Denise, the property manager. It explained that her access code had been disabled and that she needed to arrange a supervised time to collect her belongings. Caleb’s temporary occupancy had also ended, and the lease renewal now carried only my name.
Vanessa’s tone changed immediately.
She said she loved my children and had only wanted a more energetic vacation. Then she asked where everyone was supposed to stay.
“That is something you should have considered before deciding my children were replaceable,” I said.
I took Ethan and Ava on a smaller trip two weeks later. We stayed at a family resort, went snorkeling, and discovered that flamingos mostly prefer avoiding people.
Vanessa wanted my money, my home, and my loyalty while treating my children like empty seats.
Canceling the vacation was not revenge.
It was the first correction.
