Dad leaned across the table and demanded to know why I had “stolen” their upgrades.
I reminded him that every reservation, cabin, excursion, and package had been purchased through my account. Nothing had been stolen. I had simply stopped paying extra for people who had announced I was not family.
Vanessa accused me of ruining the vacation. Her interior cabin was cramped, the engine noise kept her awake, and without the drink package, every cocktail had to be charged to her own card. Mom complained that the excursions were sold out, while Brandon admitted he had brought almost no spending money because everyone assumed I would handle it.
Then Dad said the words that ended the conversation.
“You were supposed to pay, not come.”
I looked at the matching shirts, the angry faces, and the vacation they believed should remain luxurious even after removing the person who funded it.
“That arrangement is over,” I said.
The next morning, I permanently removed my card from every onboard account. They had to divide meals, transportation, and port expenses among themselves. By the final day, Vanessa had stopped ordering drinks, Dad was avoiding the specialty restaurants, and Mom had begun asking whether we could “start fresh.”
I declined.
I spent the rest of the cruise reading on my balcony, dining wherever I pleased, and enjoying the suite they assumed my money would provide for someone else.
They wanted only family.
So I finally stopped financing strangers.
