The Family Lunch Exposed Their Property Scheme
Paige was waiting in the driveway when I arrived at Alice’s house. She had brought a second attorney, a bank representative, and copies of the property documents Alice had been pressuring me to sign.
Inside, Valerie sat beside David with one hand resting on her stomach. Alice had arranged the lunch as though she were hosting a celebration. She placed the papers in front of me and said transferring the apartment into a family trust would “protect everyone’s children.”
Paige asked her to explain which children she meant.
The room went silent.
The documents would have transferred control of my apartment to a company owned by Alice, while making David the managing trustee. My name would remain on the mortgage, but I would lose the right to sell, refinance, or remove anyone living there.
Then the bank representative produced the transaction history. David had used my credit to fund Valerie’s medical expenses, nursery purchases, and baby shower deposits while telling me his company was failing.
Valerie began crying and claimed David promised the apartment would become theirs after I gave birth.
I placed the mistaken transfer receipt on the table.
“That payment was the first honest thing you sent me,” I said.
Paige served David with separation papers and formal notice that he had no ownership claim to the apartment. His access to every account was already revoked, and the disputed charges were under review.
They had expected a tired pregnant woman to sign away her home.
Instead, they found attorneys waiting beside the documents.
