The Tiny Bathroom Bug People Often Mistake For Something Worse
That small striped bug on the tile is most likely a carpet beetle larva. Even though the name makes people think they only live in carpets, these tiny larvae can show up in bathrooms, closets, bedrooms, laundry rooms, and around baseboards.
Carpet beetle larvae are usually brown, tan, or striped, with a fuzzy or bristly body. They are not the same as bed bugs, and they do not live by feeding on people. Instead, they are attracted to natural materials such as wool, feathers, pet hair, lint, dead insects, and sometimes old fabric or stored clothing.
Finding one does not always mean your home is dirty. They often appear because dust, hair, or lint has collected in hidden corners. Bathrooms can attract them when hair gathers near drains, under cabinets, or along tile edges.
The best first step is simple cleaning. Vacuum baseboards, rugs, closets, and corners carefully. Wash nearby towels or fabrics, empty the vacuum afterward, and check stored clothes or blankets for signs of damage.
While one larva is not usually an emergency, seeing many of them can mean there is a small infestation nearby. In that case, a deeper cleaning or pest-control help may be needed.
