Why People Place Bowls of Vinegar Near Their Windows

A bowl of vinegar near a window may look strange at first, but it is actually an old household trick many people still use today. Vinegar has a strong smell that can help with several common home problems, especially during warmer months.

One reason people place vinegar near windows is to help discourage insects. Flies, gnats, and some other small pests are often drawn toward light and open windows, but the sharp smell of vinegar can make the area less attractive to them. Some people also use apple cider vinegar in small bowls to trap fruit flies, especially if the bowl is covered with plastic wrap and tiny holes are poked in the top.

Another reason is odor control. Vinegar can help absorb unpleasant smells from cooking, smoke, damp air, or musty rooms. Leaving a small bowl near a window allows fresh air to move through the room while the vinegar slowly helps neutralize odors.

It is also cheap, natural, and easy to replace. That is why many older household tips include vinegar for cleaning, deodorizing, and pest control.

So while it might seem odd to see a bowl sitting by the window every evening, it usually has a simple explanation. Your neighbor is probably using a low-cost trick to keep the room fresher and help keep tiny bugs away.
