For nearly a decade, I visited my elderly neighbor every Friday. It started with small favors: bringing groceries, changing lightbulbs, carrying boxes, and sitting with her while she drank tea. Her family rarely came by, but she never complained. She only smiled and said, “Some people show love by staying.”
When she passed away, I attended the funeral quietly. Her son barely looked at me. In front of everyone, he laughed and called me “the errand girl.” I wanted to defend myself, but I remembered the little brass key she had given me weeks earlier and stayed silent.
Two weeks later, a lawyer called and asked me to come in. He placed an envelope on the desk with my name written in her handwriting. Inside was a note explaining that she had trusted me because I helped without asking for anything in return.
Then came the shock. The key opened a locked pantry cabinet in her home. Hidden behind an old flour tin were bank documents, letters, and proof that her family had been trying to pressure her into changing her will.
She had left everything exactly where it needed to be found
