If You Spot This Invasive Insect in Your Yard, Here’s What You Should Know

Finding an unfamiliar insect in your yard can be alarming, especially if you start seeing several of them on trees or plants. One insect that has become a growing concern is the spotted lanternfly, an invasive species spreading across parts of North America. While a single sighting isn’t a reason to panic, learning to identify it can help protect your landscape.

Adult spotted lanternflies have gray wings covered in black spots, but when they fly, they reveal striking red hindwings. Younger nymphs are black with white spots before developing bright red patches as they mature. These insects feed by piercing plants and sucking out sap, which can weaken trees, grapevines, fruit crops, and ornamental plants over time.

Another sign of their presence is a sticky substance called honeydew. This residue can coat leaves, patios, cars, and outdoor furniture, eventually leading to the growth of black sooty mold that may stress affected plants.

If you find spotted lanternflies or their gray, mud-like egg masses, check your state’s recommendations for reporting or removing them. Regularly inspect trees, outdoor furniture, firewood, trailers, and vehicles, as the insects and their eggs can hitch rides to new locations. If using sticky traps, choose wildlife-safe versions to avoid harming birds and beneficial insects.

The spotted lanternfly is a reminder that invasive species can spread quickly, but early detection and community awareness can make a real difference. By staying informed and monitoring your yard, you can help protect local plants, gardens, and ecosystems from further damage.
