Officer Reyes did not accuse Damon of anything. She simply told him Nadia’s condition had worsened after the concussion and doctors were admitting her overnight for observation. Because Damon was still listed as her emergency contact, the hospital had been trying to reach him regarding her belongings, insurance information, and transportation arrangements for later. Then Reyes added quietly, “Your wife asked for you. She knows you received her message.” Celeste immediately pulled her hand away from Damon’s arm. The surrounding tables had gone silent, and for once, there was no way to make Nadia sound unreasonable.
