Nathan reached me just before I got into the car.-“Mom, wait. What happened?”-I looked past him at Sabrina.-“Ask your wife where she seated me.”-His face changed.Sabrina immediately started explaining that the reception was overcrowded and that the outdoor chair was only temporary.I opened my purse and removed the cream envelope.
...
“What is that?”
“Your wedding gift.”
Sabrina stepped closer.
The panic in her expression suddenly made sense.
She knew.
Weeks earlier, Nathan had apparently mentioned that I was considering transferring the lake house to him. Somehow, Sabrina had started treating it as guaranteed.
Nathan stared at the envelope.
“You were giving us the lake house?”
“I was.”
I placed it back inside my purse.
Then I looked at Sabrina.
“But apparently I don’t really count.”
Neither of them spoke.
The deed had not been recorded yet, so the property was still entirely mine. The following Monday, I called my attorney and canceled the proposed transfer.
Nathan later apologized without asking for the house.
That mattered.
Sabrina apologized too, although hers arrived only after she understood what her little seating arrangement had cost.
I eventually repaired my relationship with my son, slowly and with boundaries.
But the lake house stayed mine.
Sabrina thought putting me beside the trash cans would show everyone where I belonged.
Instead, it reminded me not to hand away something valuable to people still deciding how much I mattered.
