I stopped a few feet from the cake.
The woman folded her arms.
“What exactly is supposed to be funny about this?”
I reached into the folder I had brought from the truck and held up a certified copy of the deed.
“My birthday present is information.”
Her expression changed.
“This ranch belongs to me.”
A few guests laughed nervously.
She did not.
I continued.
“Twenty-one years. Same owner. Same parcel number. Same name.”
Mine.
That was when the caretaker finally drove through the gate with a sheriff’s deputy behind him.
The woman immediately started talking over everyone.
She claimed she had rented the property through a private contact.
The deputy asked for the agreement.
She produced screenshots of messages and a payment receipt.
My caretaker looked at them once.
Then shook his head.
The person who had “rented” her the ranch had no connection to us at all.
She had paid thousands of dollars to a scammer.
That explained the party.
It did not explain the way she had treated me.
The deputy made that distinction very clear.
The event company was given time to remove its equipment, and the guests left quietly after realizing whose property they had been celebrating on.
Before she left, the woman approached me without the tiara.
“I really thought it was mine for the day.”
“I believe you.”
She looked relieved.
Then I added:
“But you also thought that gave you permission to humiliate a stranger in front of his children.”
She had no answer.
My boys helped me remove the final decorations before sunset.
By nightfall, the field was quiet again.
The scammer had stolen her money.
But her arrogance had cost her something else.
An entire party full of witnesses.
