My sister told me Marcus had stopped the ceremony himself.
Minutes before the vows, he had walked past the bridal suite and heard Brianna laughing with one of her bridesmaids.
“She finally stayed home,” Brianna said. “After today, I won’t have to compete with his mother anymore.”
The bridesmaid asked whether Marcus knew she had told me not to come.
Brianna laughed again.
“He’ll get over it.”
Marcus was standing outside the door.
He walked in still wearing his tuxedo.
“Did you tell my mother she wasn’t family anymore?”
Brianna froze.
At first, she denied it.
Then my sister stepped forward and told him exactly what I had said that morning.
Marcus looked at Brianna for a long time.
Then he removed his boutonniere.
“There is no wedding.”
By noon, guests were leaving.
The flowers remained untouched.
The cake was never cut.
And Marcus drove straight to my house.
When I opened the door, he looked exhausted.
“Mom, why didn’t you tell me?”
“I thought you had already chosen.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“No. She chose for me.”
Then he noticed the scrapbook sitting unopened on the table.
He picked it up and hugged me.
Brianna believed marriage would give her the right to erase the family Marcus already had.
Instead, the night before the wedding, she revealed exactly what kind of marriage she intended to build.
And Marcus decided not to step into it.
