What LEGO Actually Stands For Has a Surprisingly Simple Meaning

LEGO may look like an acronym, but the famous toy company’s name does not stand for four separate words.

The name comes from the Danish phrase “leg godt,” which means “play well.” LEGO founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen combined parts of those two words to create the name LEGO in 1934. The company says the phrase was more than a convenient name—it reflected the idea behind the toys themselves: encouraging children to play creatively and well.

The story becomes even more interesting because Kristiansen apparently did not realize at the time that the word “lego” can also be interpreted in Latin as meaning something similar to “I put together” or “I assemble.” That was an accidental coincidence rather than the actual origin of the company name.

The LEGO Group itself began in Billund, Denmark, in 1932. Kristiansen originally produced wooden toys before the company eventually became famous for its interlocking plastic bricks.

So despite viral claims that LEGO is a complicated abbreviation, the real explanation is much simpler.

LEGO = “leg godt” = “play well.”

Considering that generations of children have spent countless hours building, rebuilding, and inventing with LEGO bricks, the name turned out to be remarkably appropriate.
