Those odd glass or porcelain objects sitting on old utility poles may look decorative, but they once performed an essential job. They are electrical insulators, designed to keep current or communication signals traveling through wires instead of escaping into the pole or surrounding structures.
Glass and porcelain became popular materials because they resist electrical current, tolerate outdoor weather, and can remain functional for decades. Their unusual ridges and curved shapes are intentional, increasing the distance electricity would need to travel across the surface and helping reduce leakage during rain or humid conditions.
Insulators were especially important during the expansion of telegraph and telephone networks in the 19th and early 20th centuries. By electrically separating wires from wooden poles, they helped signals travel reliably across long distances.
Similar insulators later became important throughout electrical distribution systems. Although modern infrastructure increasingly uses advanced ceramics and composite materials, older glass and porcelain examples can still be spotted on legacy lines and rural networks.
